Lifton Children Learn Lesson in Housebuilding

Pupils at Lifton Community Academy Primary School learnt about how new homes are built and the different career opportunities in construction during a visit to Wain Homes’ Oakdene development in Lifton village.

The Exeter-based independent housebuilder is building 54 energy efficient two, three and four-bedroom homes at Oakdene, situated around an ancient oak tree in the centre of a new village green.

Wain Homes invited Lifton Community Academy’s 10 and 11-year-old Year Six pupils to the development off Fore Street, where they spent the day learning about the process of building modern new homes and finding out about the different types of jobs people can do in the housebuilding and construction industry.

The children also spent time looking round Wain Homes’ new four-bedroom Stowford show home, and were tasked to write a review of the home in the style of an estate agent.

Kate Brimacombe, director of education at Learning Academy Partnership SW, said: “Thank you to the Wain Homes team for inviting us to visit and for giving our children an enjoyable and informative experience in a way they could easily understand.

“The children now have knowledge of how the homes they live in are built and some of the jobs they may be interested in as they get older. They particularly enjoyed looking round the show home and taking part in the writing challenge to describe the property and the development in their own words.”

Benjamin Neal Julian was the winner of the writing challenge and received a £50 gift voucher from Wain Homes. Thomas Mounce and Sophie Gliddon were the runners up, each receiving a £25 voucher.

Hannah Blackbourn, regional sales director at Wain Homes, said: “We were blown away by how creative and imaginative the children’s reviews of our show home were. They clearly have an eye for interior design, as their descriptions were so detailed and emotive and reading about how our homes made them feel was very special.

“We hope the visit inspired some of the children to consider construction as a future career and I wouldn’t be surprised if we have uncovered some of the next generation of TV property presenters!”

New homes currently available at Oakdene start from £269,950 for a two-bedroom Coryton, up to £465,000 for the four-bedroom Meadwell, which comes with a £10,000 incentive towards energy bills and stamp duty.

The Oakdene development is open 10am to 5pm seven-days-a-week. For more information, visit our Oakdene development page.
