Westward Ho! was given its intriguing name from the best-selling 1855 novel by Charles Kingsley and was named in a bid to promote it as an attractive seaside resort. Life in Westward Ho! is all about enjoying the best that Devon has to offer. Westward Ho! beach has Blue Flag status, is 2.5km long and is largely unpopulated making it a fantastic place for families to enjoy the sunshine. And when we’re talking about sunshine, residents of Westward Ho! enjoy an average of 1545 hours of sunshine every year – that’s 52 more hours than the UK average. In the height of summer in June, the village gets an average of 7.3 hours of sunshine each day.

Families with active kids have a great life in Westward Ho!, with the beach popular with surfers. Plus, there are around five surf schools in and around the beach, making it the perfect place to learn a new sport. Walkers can also enjoy the stunning scenery on offer on the West Coast Path – the easy walk along the old railway and up the cliffs is the best way to take in the breath-taking North Devon coastline.

Despite being a small village, parents with primary school age children will be pleased to know that there are six primary schools in the area rated as “good” by Ofsted. They include St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, Appledore School, West Croft School and East-the-Water Community Primary School. Bideford is also home to Kingsley School and Bideford College for secondary education.
