Colyton Children Learn Housebuilding Lesson at Maple Cross

Year five and six pupils at Colyton Primary Academy in East Devon were given a lesson in housebuilding during a visit to Wain Homes’ Maple Cross development on Sidmouth Road.

The 9-to-11-year-olds learnt about the different stages of how new homes are built and the range of careers available in the construction industry.

The visit was rounded off with a tour of our recently opened four-bedroom Poplar show home before the children set about designing safety posters which will be displayed around the development.

Aerfen Mills, Head of School at Colyton Primary Academy, said: “Thank you to Wain Homes for organising such an educational visit for our children, which was a great way to complete a project the children have been working on to learn about construction.

“The visit was enjoyed by 43 of our children and helped them find out about the different types of careers which are available in housebuilding, as well as giving them an understanding of how their homes are built. There was also an important message about safety around building sites and we’re pleased that posters our children designed are being displayed around the development.”

The winning poster designer was Lilith (11) who received a £30 gift voucher from Wain Homes, with runners-up Brooke and Amelia (both 11) presented with Wain Homes stationery sets.

“All the children were enthusiastic and engaged and it wouldn’t surprise me if some of them became the housebuilding talent of the future.”

We are building 72 energy efficient 2, 3 and 4 and 5-bedroom homes at Maple Cross, which is one of the first Wain Homes developments to offer our new ‘all-inclusive’ specification, where a range of high-spec extras such as Amtico flooring, oak doors and fitted wardrobes are all being included as standard.
