New Country Park Created in Royal Wootton Basset

Our Severn Valley region has transferred 48-acres of land to create a new country park in Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.

Ownership of the land, at Brynards Hill, was transferred to the Town Council earlier this year and was formally handed over at a celebratory public ceremony.

It will belong to the community with local residents and organisations now invited to help shape its future use as a place for recreation and engagement with nature.

Jeremy Johnson, technical director of Wain Homes Severn Valley, said: “This is a landmark moment and we are very proud to have been able to transfer the land to the community as a country park on the edge of the town. 

“The town has got a fantastic new asset and neither the Town Council or the residents have had to pay for the land.

“The scale means it will be a lasting legacy, a green space to be enjoyed by all for generations to come.”

Named Coronation Park – to mark the coronation of King Charles III – access will also improve walking routes across the town.

A special event saw the town crier Owen Collier announce the handover and the Mayor, Councillor Pat Farrow, officially cut the ribbon to declare the park open. Local groups and organisations were invited to the ceremony which was open to all residents.

Mayor, Cllr Pat Farrow, said; “I am so proud and delighted that the final legal process has been completed, and the Country Park has been transferred from Wain Homes to Royal Wootton Bassett. I want to thank everyone who have worked to make this vision a reality. 

“This a significant moment in the history of Royal Wootton Bassett as it presents an exciting opportunity for local residents and organisations to shape how this park can benefit the whole town. This will be a fabulous space for recreation, nature and improving connections across town, so we are keen to engage with local people and organisations to collectively agree how it might be improved.”

Our Severn Valley region has funded 30 new trees which have already been selected and planted by volunteers from Royal Wootton Environment Trust in conjunction with the Town Council. We have built successful developments on both sides of the park and Jeremy added: “Transferring the land means that our residents can also enjoy open green space on their doorstep and we look forward to seeing how it will be used in the coming years.”
