South Gloucestershire Children Unveil Public Art in Harry Stoke
Children from St Michael’s CofE Primary School in Stoke Gifford were the guests of honour at the unveiling of new public art they inspired at our development of new homes at Mulgrove Farm Village in Harry Stoke.
The event, at the development on Great Stoke Way, marked the completion of a year-long public art project, which saw Bristol artist Andy O’Neill create seating and wood carvings, using oak from trees which had fallen or died.
The designs for the public art, which was a project organised jointly between Wain Homes and South Gloucestershire Council, were based on sketches of wildlife by the St Michael’s pupils after they were given a tour of the development’s green spaces by wildlife conservationist Steve England. The finished pieces feature a medley of local wildlife, included a heron, frogs, bull rushes, bees, butterflies, dragonflies, ladybirds, ducks, fish, hedgehogs, owls, badgers and bats.
Joining Andy and the children at the art unveiling were Sue Bandcroft of Stoke Gifford Parish Council, Afzal Shah fromopen space management consultants Trustgreen, St Michael’s teacher Hannah Fraser, and James Marlow, Paul Curtin and Maisie Boyd from Wain Homes.
James Marlow, technical manager at Wain Homes, said: “The whole purpose of this project was to produce artwork which the local community has had input into and which will be enjoyed by residents of Mulgrove Farm Village and the wider community years into the future.
“The creativity of local schoolchildren combined with the skills and craftsmanship of Andy O’Neill made this a thrilling project to be a part of and we have already had some wonderful feedback from local people as they have been following Andy’s progress on site.”
Diana Hatton, the public art project manager added: “It’s been such a pleasure working on this project with Wain Homes. They have helped put together a really strong steering group who represent the local community and have been so responsive and interested in the commission. This has helped create art that will delight the local community for years to come.”
Wain Homes built 150 new 2, 3,4 and 5-bedroom homes at the award-winning Mulgrove Farm Village development which recently sold out. A second phase of new homes at Mulgrove Farm Village is expected to be launched at the start of 2026.
