North West Team Helps Hospice Get Winter Ready

Building new homes for our customers is a fulfilling and rewarding experience and as part of our role as a community housebuilder we are also presented with opportunities which allow us to give something back.

For the past three years, members of our North West team have volunteered to help our friends at Willowbrook Hospice in St Helens, Merseyside, as part of our Helping Hands initiative.

‘Helping Hands’ sees every Wain Homes employee given time out of the business to volunteer to support good causes in their local communities.

Willowbrook Hospice is an independent UK charity formed in 1993 to establish and create a local, specialist palliative care unit for the local community. The doors to the hospice opened in 1997 and, to date, has provided care, compassion, comfort, love, laughter and warmth to over 10,000 patients. 

The hospice is close to the hearts of many of our North West team and has also been one of our ‘Charities of the Year’. When we were recently asked if we could visit to get the grounds and gardens ready for the winter months, the team rallied immediately.

Colleagues Wendy Dolan, Chris Lafferty, Michael Johnson, Claire Campbell, Karl Richmond, Dave Mullally, James McGowan, Lynsey Dakin, Sam Wakefield and Sean Privilege set to work in the gardens, fencing off the compost corner, clearing the overgrown areas, raking and bagging leaves to make compost, along with painting and varnishing the benches and chairs in the gardens.

We are proud of all of our team who made a real difference once again for Willowbrook Hospice. 

Wendy Dolan, our North West Sales Office Manager, said: “I chatted to a lady there in the gardens whose 48-year-old son was on end of life care. She said the gardens were her sanity when she needed a breather, and to see us helping in them and hearing our camaraderie as we did it was lovely.

“We chatted, she offloaded and I listened. Very humbling indeed.”
